Meeting IBC Acoustical Requirements for Multifamily Construction

Description

The 2018 International Building Code Section 1206, Sound Transmission, regulates the control of both air borne and structure borne noise. It specifies Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Impact Insulation Class (IIC) ratings, for demising partitions separating living units from other living units and from public spaces. Designing multifamily buildings to meet IBC acoustical standards requires understanding not only the acoustical concepts but also the construction characteristics required to meet those criteria.

The program provides an acoustics terminology foundation, explains the two IBC criteria, discusses what construction characteristics are required, and presents several accepted partition types. While the presentation is based in technical, acoustical principles, it employs everyday language to explain those principles in a non-technical fashion. Finally, there is a discussion of common misconceptions about noise control.
