The Importance of a Diversity of Housing

A resilient community is one that can withstand the stress of a growing population on its infrastructure, economy, and housing stock. One essential trait to resilient places is diversity in housing types. A mix of types can provide flexibility and easily respond to the differing needs and incomes of communities over time. Just as biodiversity in the natural environment creates healthy, resilient habitats, housing diversity in the built environment creates strong, vibrant communities. This session will explain how one of the largest New Urbanist architecture and planning firms incorporates a mix of types into the neighborhoods it designs--making resiliency feasible for the client and appropriate for the community.
