Energy Modelling for Residential Retrofits


While energy models for the residential sector can be cost prohibitive, there are several good online tools that can help guide architects toward prioritizing energy conservation measures. This session compares the results of online tools and full energy models of residential case studies. These examples are used to generate discussions of the role of architects and modelers in the residential sector. The session also discusses residential net zero projects vs. resilient community projects. While modeling can help with both, the time spent modeling is leveraged by the application to multiple buildings in resilient community projects. Using case studies, presenters show how full energy models of a housing type can be used to help an entire community prioritize energy conservation measures. The goal of this modeling is to create 'Energy Retrofit' Coops that can move a community toward lower energy costs and more resilience.
