The Power of Power: Dealing with Personal and Organizational Power in the Workplace..

Power dynamics are often viewed as negative and/or ignored. It is a complex and emotionally loaded concept in individual relationships and within an organization. This presentation will deal with power in the organizational context with the goals of helping consultants and coaches work effectively within the power dynamics of an organization and to understand their own relationship with power. Dr. Blanton will review classic and more recent research on power. She will also address potential dangers in power relations (such as denial, over-identification, and exploitation. She will use case examples from her own practice and provide practical applications.

 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Summarize the classic research on various types of power relations.
  2. Compare and contrast the differences in the power relations within clinical and organizational settings.
  3. Name the four perils of power.
  4. Describe at least three ways that gender and race influence power relationships in consulting settings.

Judith S. Blanton, Ph.D

Dr. Blanton has 20 plus years of experience helping individuals, teams and organizations become effective, efficient and vital. Her approach combines psychological knowledge, practical experience and business savvy. Her work involves a broad range of industries including high tech, retail, entertainment, health-care, government and not-for-profit organizations. Part of her practice involves coaching other consultants and coaches to help them better serve their clients.

Prior to founding Blanton Consulting, she was a Partner with the well-respected psychological consulting firm of RHR International, LLC and served as managing director of the LA Office.She received her BA and Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas in Austin and holds an Advanced Management Program Certificate from the University of Southern California’s School of Business. She is a licensed psychologist, Fellow of the American Psychological Association, and Board Certified with a diplomate in Organizational and Business Consulting Psychology. She has a long career of professional service in the psychological community. Dr. Blanton is a past president of SCO and has received a number of other professional awards.
