Mastering Vulnerability: Movement Qualities of Pre Efforts and Efforts in Dance/Movement Therapy

In this webinar, you can deepen your understanding of body expressions of learning and defense strategies, as well as coping skills and creative intelligence. Learn the pre effort and effort movement qualities proposed by the Kestenberg Movement Profile (KMP), develop embodied interventions grounded in a theory, and gain skills to help clients with such themes as learning or test anxiety, interpersonal conflicts, and coping skill development. This webinar supports the dance/movement therapist’s psychomotor assessment and intervention skills within a socially conscious framework.


By the end of the webinar, participants will:

  1. Be able to distinguish between movement characteristics of Pre Efforts and Efforts
  2. Be able to create embodied interventions grounded in a developmental perspective
  3. Be able to work with themes such as learning challenges, coping skill development, vulnerability, intrapersonal conflict.


Melanie Johnson, Ph.D., R-DMT, NCC, KMP Analyst

Melanie Johnson, Ph.D., R-DMT, NCC, Certified KMP Analyst, RYT-200 serves as adjunct faculty at Antioch University New England in the Dance/Movement Therapy program, where she teaches psychomotor assessment. She is a certified KMP analyst, trainer, and instructor who has offered workshops and trainings in the U.S., UK, Germany, and China. Her Ph.D. thesis examined the validity of the tension flow rhythms in the Kestenberg Movement Profile. Dr. Johnson currently serves as vice president of the New England Chapter of the American Dance Therapy Association and resides in Boston, MA where she is a clinician and dance/movement therapist at Harbor Counseling Center. She has been a hatha yoga instructor since 2004.
